In August 2011, the GRE® revised General Test replaced the GRE® General Test. If you're one of the many people who tested before August 1st, 2011, you may be wondering, "Are my scores still valid?" The answer is yes. All GRE® scores are good for 5 years. What that means for you is that during the 5-year period after you take the test, you can still use your scores to apply to thousands of graduate and business school programs around the world.

Here are other important things you need to know about GRE scores if you took the test before August 1st, 2011.

What is the difference between the prior score scale and the score scale for the GRE revised General Test?

  • Before August 1st, 2011, test scores for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections were reported on a 200 — 800 score scale, in 10-point increments.
  • With the introduction of the GRE revised General Test, scores for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are reported on a 130 — 170 score scale, in 1-point increments.
  • The score scale for the Analytical Writing section did not change. Scores are reported on a 0 — 6 score scale, in half-point increments.

Will the programs I'm applying to accept GRE scores from tests taken before August 1st, 2011?

Programs that accept GRE scores are aware that all official scores are valid for 5 years and should be considered with equal preference in their admissions decisions. Check with the individual institutions to which you are applying to learn about their specific admissions requirements.

How do I access my GRE scores from tests taken before August 1st, 2011?

  • View your scores online: Your scores will be available for 5 years after the testing year (July 1 — June 30) in which you tested.  
  • Receive your scores in the mail: Scores for the computer-based test were mailed to you approximately 15 days after your test date.
  • Hear scores over the phone: You can receive your scores by phone for a small fee.

Can I send additional score reports to my prospective schools?

Yes. You can have your scores sent to as many schools as you like. There's a fee for each additional report and you can order online, by mail, fax or phone. To learn more, visit ets.org/gre

I took the test before August 1st, 2011. How will my prospective schools compare my scores with scores from the GRE revised General Test?

Score reports include all the information schools need to compare scores from both the tests administered prior to August 1, 2011 and the GRE revised General Test. If you tested before August 1st, your score report will include estimated scores on the 130 — 170 score scales for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections, in addition to your scores on the prior 200 — 800 score scale. Score reports will also include percentile rank information for each section.

Plus, ETS provides concordance information, which shows the relationship between scores on both score scales.

I took the test before August 1st, 2011. Can I use my old test prep materials from the prior test format to prepare for the GRE revised General Test?

Since the GRE revised General Test features a new design and new question types, using prep from the prior test format is not recommended. The good news is FREE official test prep materials are available. learn more now>
